In the past eleven years under the Make in India initiative, India has charted an impressive transformation in its manufacturing and innovation landscape. This flagship programme has helped reposition the country from import dependency to a global production hub. India’s electronics exports soared nearly eightfold, and mobile phone exports have seen a dramatic jump, making India the world’s second-largest mobile phone manufacturer.
India’s railway and metro systems also showcase domestic excellence: over 150 Vande Bharat trains are now in operation, while Indian-made metro coaches are being exported to countries like Australia and Canada. The semiconductor push has accelerated too with large investments in fabs, design hubs, and packaging (OSAT) facilities positioning India more firmly in the global chip ecosystem.
On defense and health fronts, India now exports military equipment to over 100 nations, with more than 65 % of its defense hardware made domestically. The pharmaceutical sector reversed a trade deficit in FY 22 to a surplus by FY 25. The toy industry also strengthened: producing 400 million units annually and cutting toy imports by 52 %.
Meanwhile, the startup ecosystem has flourished with over 1.8 lakh startups, creation of 17.6 lakh jobs, and emergence of 118 unicorns. As Make in India marks its 11th year, the campaign’s trajectory is clear India is steadily realizing its vision of being a self-reliant, globally competitive manufacturing powerhouse.
