A Purple Notice is one of eight international notices used by INTERPOL. Rather than targeting a specific person (like with Red or Yellow Notices), it focuses on criminal practices, tools, devices, or concealment methods employed by offenders.
Recently, India’s Enforcement Directorate (ED) issued its first ever Purple Notice via INTERPOL, signaling growing global cooperation in identifying not just criminals but the ways they operate.
The intent is to alert member countries about emerging threats to public safety—smuggling techniques, new types of fraud, or concealment methods that might evade detection. This enables law enforcement across borders to adapt and respond better.
About INTERPOL: it stands for the International Criminal Police Organization. Founded in 1923, it comprises 196 member countries and facilitates police cooperation worldwide. It is not a UN body, though since 1996 it holds observer status at the United Nations.
Other types of INTERPOL notices include Red, Yellow, Blue, Black, Green, Orange, and Silver (in pilot phase), each serving different functions from locating wanted persons to missing persons and objects.
