On the night of September 7–8, sky gazers across India are in for a spectacular celestial treat - a Blood Moon, caused by a total lunar eclipse. The term “blood moon” refers to the reddish hue the Moon takes on when Earth passes directly between the Sun and the Moon. During this alignment, sunlight is filtered through Earth’s atmosphere, scattering blue light and bending red light onto the lunar surface. This natural process, also responsible for fiery sunrises and sunsets, gives the Moon its dramatic crimson glow.
The September eclipse is particularly special, with 82 minutes of totality, making it one of the longest eclipses in recent years. In India, the eclipse begins around 8:58 PM IST, with totality lasting from 11:00 PM to 12:22 AM, before ending at 2:25 AM. Unlike solar eclipses, it is completely safe to watch with the naked eye. Beyond its scientific wonder, the Blood Moon carries cultural and astrological significance, adding to its mystery and allure.
