On 6 September 1960, a tragic event unfolded in Matikhrü, a Naga village in India. During tensions in the Naga Hills, the Indian Army carried out a violent operation. Homes were burned, villagers were tortured, and nine men were executed. The Matikhrü massacre remains a dark chapter in Indian history, reminding us of the human cost of internal conflict and the importance of remembering such events.
On the same date in the world, 6 September 1522 marked a historic milestone in exploration. The Spanish ship Victoria, led by Juan Sebastián Elcano, returned to Spain after completing the first circumnavigation of the Earth. Originally part of Ferdinand Magellan’s fleet, Victoria’s successful voyage proved that humans could sail around the planet, transforming maps, trade, and global understanding.
September 6 stands as a day of contrasts: one story of sorrow and loss in India, the other of courage and discovery on the high seas. History reminds us of both the tragedy and triumph that shape our world.
