Microsoft has terminated four employees who staged protests at its offices against the company’s ties to Israel during the ongoing Gaza war. Two, Anna Hattle and Riki Fameli, received voicemail notifications of dismissal, while two others, Nisreen Jaradat and Julius Shan, were also let go, the activist group No Azure for Apartheid said.
The group has demanded Microsoft cut contracts with Israel and pay reparations to Palestinians, accusing the firm of enabling military surveillance through its Azure cloud services. A joint investigation by The Guardian, +972 Magazine, and Local Call revealed Israel’s military has used Azure to store mass phone call recordings of Palestinians. Microsoft has since hired Covington & Burling LLP for a review.
The latest firings follow a sit-in at company president Brad Smith’s office, where seven protesters were arrested. Microsoft said the dismissals were due to “serious policy breaches” and safety concerns.
This is not the first flashpoint: earlier this year, pro-Palestinian staff disrupted Microsoft’s 50th anniversary celebrations, leading to additional terminations.
As the humanitarian crisis in Gaza deepens, protests against corporate and institutional ties to Israel are intensifying worldwide.
