Nepal is on the verge of appointing Sushila Karki, former Chief Justice, as its new interim Prime Minister following widespread Gen-Z-led anti-corruption protests. The protests erupted largely over demands for government accountability, triggered by a controversial social media ban. fter Prime Minister K.P. Sharma Oli resigned amid demonstrations, clashes, and high casualty counts negotiations were held among President Ram Chandra Paudel, the Army Chief Ashok Raj Sigdel, and youth protest leaders.
Karki, aged 73 and noted for her anti-corruption stance during her tenure as Chief Justice, is to take the oath later this evening at around 8:45 pm Nepal time. Her ascension would mark a historic moment the first woman to lead Nepal’s government.
Key demands from the protesters include the dissolution of Parliament, and development of a neutral caretaker administration to ensure fair elections. This interim period is expected to last until elections are held. The declaration of national emergency is also under discussion, due to the severity of unrest.
Nepal watchers see today’s move as a pivotal moment not just a change of leadership but a test of how protest movements, constitutional norms, and youth voices can shape democratic transitions.
