The Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) is an intergovernmental alliance formed in 2001 to strengthen political, economic, and security ties across Eurasia. Its members include major powers like China, Russia, India, and Pakistan, along with Central Asian nations. Together, they represent nearly 40% of the world’s population and about 20% of global GDP, making the SCO a significant regional bloc.
For India, the SCO provides both opportunities and challenges. On one hand, it offers a platform for counter-terrorism cooperation, deeper engagement with Central Asia, and enhanced trade and connectivity. It also strengthens India’s role in shaping regional peace and stability. On the other hand, India must carefully balance its ties with China and Pakistan within the SCO framework while safeguarding its strategic autonomy.
Despite differences, India can use the SCO to expand its influence in Asia, promote cultural exchanges, and push for greater economic collaboration. With growing global uncertainty, the SCO could become an important tool for India to assert its diplomatic and strategic presence.
