According to new monitoring, air-quality-index (AQI) readings across key zones have climbed above 200. The WBPCB attributes the change primarily to meteorological factors—cooling nights, stable atmospheric layers trapping pollutants, and residual smoke from nearby states. They emphasise the lack of “direct causation” from fireworks.
Still, the timing coincides with festival activities, sparking concern. Residents note visible haze, dullered skies, and increased respiratory discomfort. With festivities due soon, the city faces a challenge: even without fresh fire-cracker spikes, the combination of weather + existing emissions can push AQI deeper into “Very Poor” territory.
Authorities are stepping up measures: enhanced monitoring across zones, advisories for sensitive groups, and reinforcing restrictions on burst hours or banned items. The message to residents: minimise outdoor exposure, consider masks/purifiers, and follow alerts as the festival night approaches.
