During his recent mission aboard the International Space Station (ISS) as part of the Axiom Mission 4, Shubhanshu Shukla shared an evocative image: the Indian subcontinent glowing beneath orbit, framed by darkness and the curving sea. He remarked that during the Diwali season—when lights and meaning converge—the view reinforced India’s place in a delicate, shared global tapestry. According to media reports, he told Prime Minister Narendra Modi that from space, the country no longer appears as fragmented by lines or divisions; instead, it glows “as one land, one story.”
Shukla, an Indian Air Force Group Captain turned astronaut, became the first Indian to reach the ISS and the second Indian in space, marking a pivotal moment for India’s human-spaceflight aspirations. His reflections from orbit weren’t just about geography—they were about identity, connectivity, and perspective. From 400 km above Earth, he saw how lights transcended borders, how the Tan & Burn of Diwali fireworks mirrors cityscapes illuminated at night, and how the concept of “us vs them” blurs in the grand view of Earth.
As India celebrates Diwali, Shukla’s observations serve as a symbolic reminder: the dinner-table diya, the city-scape lights, and the network of streets all find echoes in the cosmic view. What looks like a “jewel” from space is more than colour—it’s a reflection of millions of lights, stories and aspirations shining together.
Whether you’re watching fireworks in your neighbourhood or seeing lanterns released in the sky, remember: when you scale out to 400 km, you’re looking at a shared home, and every light counts.
