Makers Hive, based in Hyderabad, is reshaping prosthetic access with KalArm — a fully functional bionic hand designed for upper-limb amputees. Unlike typical global prosthetics which cost tens of lakhs, KalArm leverages 3D printing, in-house component design (sensors, actuators, controller) and localized manufacturing to offer similar functionality at a much lower price.
KalArm responds to muscle signals from the wearer’s forearm using EMG (electromyography) sensors, enabling smooth, intuitive control. It supports 18 predefined grip patterns — such as grip, pinch, and tripod — along with six customizable grips to suit user needs. A companion mobile app enables firmware updates and performance monitoring, making maintenance and adaptability much simpler.
Beyond functionality, what stands out is affordability and accessibility. By drastically cutting costs without compromising on core performance, Makers Hive hopes to make advanced prosthetic solutions available to a broader segment — especially in developing countries where such devices often remain out of reach. The startup’s efforts mark an important step toward democratizing assistive technology and restoring independence and dignity to thousands of amputees.
