For many locals, this blossom-driven tourism brings real cash: during peak months, some farmers earn substantial extra income by offering boat rides, selling flowers and plants, or catering to visitors.

Yet beneath the charm lies a growing ecological tension. The waterlily — classified as an introduced and invasive aquatic plant — disrupts the delicate wetland ecosystem. Its dense mats block sunlight and reduce oxygen levels in water, degrading habitat quality for fish and other aquatic life, and impairing water quality. When the massive biomass decomposes, it can even elevate greenhouse-gas emissions.

For paddy cultivation — the traditional livelihood of the region — the invasion poses serious problems. Clearing waterlilies for the next rice cycle demands extra labour or heavy herbicide use; failing that, crop yields may suffer.
