A landmark initiative fusing tradition and technology took shape in Bhopal as Chief Minister Mohan Yadav unveiled the Vikramaditya Vedic Clock and its companion mobile app. This Rs 1 crore installation resurrects ancient timekeeping methods rooted in Panchang and the legacy of Ujjain’s King Vikramaditya. The clock marks a 30-hour day, with each "hour" spanning 48 minutes, calculated from sunrise to the following sunrise unlike the Western 24-hour convention.
The app complements the clock, offering 3,179 years of calendrical data across 189 languages, along with tools for Panchang, Tithi, Nakshatra, Muhurat timings, and alerts for festivals and meditation.
ForumIAS previously spotlighted the clock’s symbolic significance, highlighting its pioneering design—mounted on an 85-foot tower at Ujjain’s Jantar Mantar—and its ability to display planetary positions, Muhurat and astrological calculations, alongside IST and GMT.
Situated at the crossroads of the zero meridian and the Tropic of Cancer, Ujjain’s heritage in astronomy makes it an apt locale for such a tribute to India’s celestial wisdom.
