This Deepavali, the buzz is back in Sivakasi, India’s firecracker hub, after the Supreme Court allowed green crackers in Delhi-NCR. The decision has brought hope to an industry that has faced years of bans and falling sales due to pollution concerns.
Green crackers, developed by NEERI, are designed to reduce emissions by about 30%. Manufacturers believe this could revive business and protect the livelihoods of nearly 8 lakh workers who depend on the trade. Yet, environmentalists remain skeptical, arguing that even reduced pollution still adds to Delhi’s already toxic winter air.
Despite the doubts, Sivakasi’s markets are alive with innovation such as tanks shooting colorful lights, peacock-themed fireworks, and emu-shaped crackers that delight children. The industry says it is adapting to changing times while respecting environmental rules.
As celebrations begin, India finds itself at a crossroads between preserving festive traditions and protecting the planet. Whether green crackers can truly strike that balance will decide how bright this Deepavali really shines.
