OpenAI has quietly handed a premium perk to millions of free ChatGPT users. Starting September 4, the much-loved “Projects” feature—previously locked behind a Plus subscription—is rolling out on web and Android, with iOS support promised “within days.”
Projects let users bundle multiple chats, notes, and uploads into clean, color-coded folders, finally ending the chaos of endless history scrolls. Each project can now accept up to 5 files on free accounts, while Plus and Pro users keep higher limits. OpenAI also added custom icons, color themes, and project-specific memory controls, so work and personal conversations stay neatly separated.
The company teased more refinements ahead, including parental controls to help families manage AI usage. For students, creators, or professionals juggling research threads, Projects transforms ChatGPT from a single chat box into a lightweight knowledge workspace.
Early testers report the upgrade feels like “bookmarking and filing cabinets merged,” saving time and boosting focus. With this release, OpenAI signals its intent to make organization—and trust—core to the ChatGPT experience.
