What is Adi Vaani App?

The Ministry of Tribal Affairs has introduced Adi Vaani, an AI-powered translation app designed to digitize and preserve India’s tribal languages. Developed by IIT-Delhi with BITS-Pilani, IIIT Naya Raipur, and tribal research institutes, the app aims to bridge communication gaps while protecting cultural heritage.

India is home to 461 tribal languages, of which many are vulnerable or endangered. Adi Vaani will initially support Bhili, Gondi, Santali, and Mundari, spoken widely across central and eastern India, and later expand to Kui and Garo. With features like translation between Hindi, English, and tribal languages, as well as OCR tools for reading study material, the app holds promise for education, administration, and policy implementation.

Over 250 tribal educators and community leaders contributed to building the app’s word corpus, translating folklore, NCERT books, and oral traditions into written form, turning oral heritage into digital archives.

Beyond technology, Adi Vaani represents a step towards cultural empowerment and inclusivity, ensuring that tribal voices are not lost in India’s digital age.
