Aviation is a major contributor to global emissions, releasing carbon dioxide, nitrogen oxides, and contrails that worsen climate change. To tackle this, Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) is emerging as a key solution.
SAF, also called aviation biofuel, is produced from renewable sources like used cooking oil, algae, agricultural residues, municipal waste, and animal fats. It is a “drop-in” fuel, meaning it can be blended with conventional jet fuel without requiring changes in aircraft engines or airport infrastructure. This makes adoption easier for airlines.
The biggest advantage of SAF is its ability to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by up to 80% compared to traditional jet fuel. It also helps diversify energy sources, reduce dependence on imported oil, and create new jobs in the green energy sector.
However, challenges remain. SAF currently costs more than double regular jet fuel, and large-scale production requires new infrastructure for storage, blending, and transport. Feedstock supply is also limited and must remain sustainable to avoid harming food security or biodiversity.
India is preparing for global SAF adoption under the CORSIA framework. Starting in 2027, international flights from India must blend 1% SAF, increasing to 2% in 2028, with domestic mandates expected later.
