Have you ever wondered why the highest administrative officers in a country or state are still called “Secretaries”? The title sounds simple, but in reality, it doesn’t do justice to their power and responsibilities.
A Secretary in government today isn’t just managing files or taking notes. They run entire ministries, make policy decisions affecting millions, and lead thousands of employees. Yet, the word “Secretary” still suggests clerical work or subordination, which can confuse people about their true authority.
Historically, “Secretary” meant a trusted advisor handling confidential matters, but over time, it became linked to routine office work and even gender stereotypes. Shows like Mad Men reinforced the image of secretaries as supportive staff rather than leaders.
Modern administrative roles demand strategic thinking, leadership, and executive power. Titles like Chief Administrator, Director-General, or Executive Commissioner better reflect these responsibilities and convey respect both nationally and internationally.
Using the right title isn’t just semantics-it signals authority, earns respect, and reflects the true weight of the job. Maybe it’s time to retire “Secretary” and embrace a modern, powerful title.
