India is stepping into a new space era with the construction of its second rocket launch complex at Kulasekarapattinam, Tamil Nadu. The project, inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in 2024, officially began construction on August 27, 2025 with a ground-breaking ceremony.
ISRO Chairman V. Narayanan announced that the site is designed to handle 20–25 satellite launches every year, mainly through the Small Satellite Launch Vehicle (SSLV). Covering over 2,200 acres, this facility is expected to boost India’s capacity to launch small and medium satellites for both national and international clients.
Currently, India operates launches from Sriharikota, which already has two pads and a third under construction. However, with increasing global demand and India’s growing role in space, Kulasekarapattinam will serve as an additional hub, including for private rocket launches.
Narayanan highlighted that the site will be ready for launches by the end of 2026, with the first mission possibly scheduled by late next year. The facility aims to make India more competitive in the commercial satellite launch market, strengthening its position as a space leader.
