Australia has announced its 16-player squad for the upcoming two-match Test series against Sri Lanka, with Steve Smith stepping in as captain due to Pat Cummins' absence for the birth of his second child and an ankle injury.
The squad includes several notable selections:
- Steve Smith (c): Leading the team in Cummins' absence.
- Travis Head (vc): Appointed as vice-captain.
- Nathan McSweeney: Recalled after being dropped during the series against India.
- Cooper Connolly: The 21-year-old all-rounder earns his maiden call-up, adding depth to the spin department.
- Todd Murphy and Matthew Kuhnemann: Both spinners return to strengthen Australia's bowling options.
Other members of the squad include Sean Abbott, Scott Boland, Alex Carey, Usman Khawaja, Sam Konstas, Marnus Labuschagne, Nathan Lyon, Beau Webster, and Josh Inglis.
The selectors have opted for a spin-heavy lineup to adapt to Sri Lanka's conditions, reflecting their strategy to tackle the challenges posed by the subcontinent. Notably absent from the squad are fast bowler Josh Hazlewood and all-rounder Mitchell Marsh, both sidelined due to injuries.
The first Test will take place at Galle International Stadium on January 29, with Australia looking to defend the Warne-Muralitharan Trophy.
