Delhi is reeling under an intense heatwave with temperatures soaring up to 45.5°C. The IMD has issued a red alert, warning residents of extreme weather conditions till June 12. The heatwave is expected to ease slightly with light showers forecasted on June 13 and 14. In the meantime, staying safe is crucial.
To protect yourself, drink plenty of water throughout the day, even if you’re not thirsty.
Avoid sugary, alcoholic or caffeinated drinks. Dress in light-coloured, loose cotton or linen clothes to reflect heat.
Limit outdoor activity during peak afternoon hours, and take frequent breaks in cool or shaded areas if stepping out is necessary. Use fans or air conditioners, and take cool showers to stay comfortable indoors. Don’t forget to apply sunscreen with at least SPF 30 to avoid sunburn. These small steps can help you avoid heat-related illnesses like heat exhaustion or stroke during extreme heat conditions.
