Delhi allows women to work night shifts - But only with their consent!

In a progressive move, the Delhi government has officially permitted women to work night shifts, subject to certain safety and welfare conditions. The announcement was made on July 29, 2025, marking a significant policy shift aimed at promoting gender inclusivity in employment. The new rule allows women to work between 7 PM and 6 AM, provided their employers meet specified safety standards. These include secure transportation, access to toilets, proper lighting, and the presence of female supervisors during shifts.

The initiative is expected to open up greater job opportunities for women in sectors like IT, hospitality, and healthcare, where round-the-clock work is common. Officials emphasized that the policy does not make night shifts mandatory but gives women the option, supported by strict rules to ensure their protection.

The move aligns with broader efforts to boost women's participation in the workforce and ensure workplace equality. Many have welcomed the decision as a much-needed change that balances empowerment with responsibility. Employers have been asked to submit compliance reports and will face penalties for violations. The government aims to monitor implementation closely to make this change both effective and safe.
