Shibu Soren, revered as "Guruji," the founding leader of the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) and three-time Chief Minister, passed away on August 4, 2025, at 8:56 a.m. in Delhi’s Sir Ganga Ram Hospital. He was 81 and had been battling kidney issues, heart complications, diabetes, and the effects of a recent stroke.
Born on January 11, 1944, in what’s now Ramgarh, Jharkhand, Soren spearheaded the tribal rights movement and was instrumental in the creation of Jharkhand state in 2000. He served multiple terms in both Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha, and was Union Coal Minister before leading Jharkhand as Chief Minister in stints during 2005, 2008–09, and 2009–10.
Known for his grassroots activism and fierce advocacy for Adivasi identity, Soren earned reverence among tribal communities. His legal battles including a high-profile conviction and later acquittal did little to diminish his standing.
His son, Chief Minister Hemant Soren, expressed profound grief on social media: “Today I have become empty.” Political leaders across parties paid tribute, calling his demise an end of an era.
