Following Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar’s resignation on July 21, 2025, Congress MP Shashi Tharoor expressed genuine concern over Dhankhar’s sudden health issues and extended wishes for his rapid recovery. Yet, he also acknowledged broader speculation around the timing of the exit calling it unexpected and triggering political conjecture.
Tharoor emphasized clarity is needed on whether the ruling BJP-led NDA will engage the opposition in the selection of Dhankhar’s successor. While he admitted he is unaware of the likely nominee, he noted the candidate will inevitably emerge from the ruling party’s ranks given their strong majority in both Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha.
He also remains a speculative contender himself, due to his national prominence and rapport with BJP leadership, though he continues toclash with Congress. Other potential names include Nitish Kumar, Harivansh Narayan Singh, and former governors such as Arif Mohammed Khan.
The Election Commission has already initiated the formal process, with a VP poll to be held “as soon as possible”, and constitutional mandates suggest the new officeholder will serve a full five‑year term not merely the remainder of Dhankhar’s tenure.
