On July 21, a Bangladesh Air Force F‑7 BGI training jet crashed into Milestone School & College in Uttara, Dhaka, around 1:06 PM. The jet took off for a routine training mission but suffered a mechanical failure soon after liftoff. The pilot tried to steer it away from crowded areas but couldn’t regain control then tragically impacted a school building.
The pilot and at least 25 schoolchildren, plus a teacher, died. Injury reports vary: some say 27 deaths, others note up to 31. Over 170 people were hurt, many with serious burn injuries.Witnesses described scenes of flames, smoke, and chaos as students fled amid panic and horror. First responders battled fires and evacuated the injured quickly. The government declared July 22 a day of national mourning and launched a high-level military probe.
The crash has renewed concerns about the safety of Bangladesh's ageing Chinese-made F‑7 jets, which have a known track record of malfunctions. Officials have promised full investigations into why the aircraft failed during a low-altitude training flight.
This heartbreaking event stands as one of Dhaka’s worst peacetime aviation disasters, raising tough questions about training flights over densely populated cities and urgent steps needed to prevent future tragedies.
