In a sharp diplomatic message, China has warned India against interfering in matters related to Tibet, particularly the succession of the Dalai Lama. Beijing reiterated its long-standing claim that it holds the exclusive right to approve the next Dalai Lama, citing what it calls a “historical legacy” from imperial China.
The warning comes amid renewed global interest in the aging spiritual leader’s succession and India’s growing engagement with Tibetan exiles. China’s Foreign Ministry spokesperson emphasized that recognizing or supporting any Dalai Lama chosen without Beijing’s endorsement would be viewed as a violation of China’s sovereignty and political sensitivities.
India has traditionally hosted the Dalai Lama and the Tibetan government-in-exile since 1959, but has avoided formally commenting on the succession issue. However, recent diplomatic and cultural interactions have prompted Beijing to reinforce its stance.
Analysts view this as part of China’s broader effort to consolidate control over Tibet and suppress international voices supporting Tibetan autonomy or religious freedom.
