In a significant diplomatic development, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has accepted an invitation from Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney to attend the upcoming G7 Summit in Kananaskis, Alberta, scheduled for June 15–17, 2025.
This move signals a potential thaw in relations between the two nations, which had been strained following the 2023 assassination of Canadian Sikh activist Hardeep Singh Nijjar-a case that led to mutual expulsions of diplomats and heightened tensions.
During a phone call, Carney emphasized India's global economic importance and the need for dialogue based on mutual respect. Modi expressed gratitude for the invitation and conveyed his commitment to working together with "renewed vigour," highlighting the deep people-to-people ties and shared democratic values between India and Canada.
While some Sikh advocacy groups in Canada have criticized the invitation, viewing it as a betrayal, the broader international community sees Modi's participation as a step toward rebuilding trust and cooperation.
As India continues to play a pivotal role in global affairs, its engagement in the G7 discussions underscores the importance of inclusive dialogue in addressing pressing international challenges.
