On June 4, a deadly stampede outside Bengaluru's Chinnaswamy Stadium during RCB's IPL victory celebrations claimed eleven lives and injured many. Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah distanced his government from the tragedy, stating it had no connection to the stadium and blamed official negligence. He noted this was the first such incident under his leadership, emphasizing that several officials, including Bengaluru Police Commissioner B Dayananda and his political secretary K Govindaraj, were suspended. Siddaramaiah learned of the deaths at 5:45 pm, hours after they were reported at 3:50 pm, highlighting a delay in communication.
The incident triggered protests and demands for Siddaramaiah's resignation from the BJP-led Opposition. The government announced ₹25 lakh compensation for victims' families. While Siddaramaiah attended a related RCB felicitation event at Vidhana Soudha, he was absent from the stadium, intensifying debates over accountability and safety measures at public events.
