India’s assistant coach Ajinkya Rahane has endorsed left-arm seamer Arshdeep Singh for a Test debut in the crucial 4th Test at Manchester if Jasprit Bumrah is rested. Rahane emphasized that in English conditions, Arshdeep’s ability to swing both ways and bring the left-arm angle could create rough patches for the spinners to exploit.
Bumrah was scheduled to play only three of five Tests for workload management, having featured in Leeds and Lord’s. If he sits out, Arshdeep is seen as the ideal replacement . Though he hasn’t yet played a Test, Arshdeep impressed in county cricket with Kent last season, taking 13 wickets in five matches .
Ahead of the Manchester Test starting July 23, Arshdeep suffered a minor cut on his bowling hand during nets at Beckenham. Assistant coach Ryan ten Doeschate confirmed it required medical assessment but noted it was a minor cut .
As India trails 1–2 in the series, pressure mounts to balance bowling variation and workload. Whether management opts for experienced fast bowler Bumrah or fresh left‑arm swing option Arshdeep, the decision could be pivotal in Manchester.
