Dr GS Roshni, once a poised newsreader at Doordarshan, is now Kerala’s only certified female snake rescuer. Her journey took a wild turn during a one-day wildlife camp, where she discovered a deep passion for saving reptiles. Since then, she’s rescued over 800 snakes, including 114+ pythons, Russell's vipers, kraits, and even a 20 kg King Cobra near Peppara Sanctuary.
In a male-dominated field, Roshni faced constant doubt-It’s a man’s job, people said. But her courage never wavered. She earned her snake-handling license and joined Kerala Forest Department’s Rapid Response Team, where she now leads operations.
Her most thrilling moment? Catching a massive 14–16 ft King Cobra alone, using just a hook and a sack. 'I calmly said ‘please'—and it worked,” she smiled.
Despite late-night calls, tough terrain, and biased comments, Roshni continues to serve fearlessly-sometimes answering 20+ calls a night, zooming off on her scooter with a snake safely tied below the seat.
Her message to young girls: “Whether it’s forests or fighter jets, you belong. Don’t let anyone say you can’t.”
