On July 22, 2025, the Indian Army took delivery of its first batch of three Boeing AH‑64E Apache attack helicopters from the United States. Painted in desert camouflage, these advanced Apache “tanks in the air” landed at Hindon Air Force Station, boosting India’s offensive capabilities near its western frontier.
This is the first time the Army - not just the Air Force - will operate Apaches, joining the two existing IAF squadrons based in Pathankot and Jorhat. The deployment follows a ₹5,691 crore deal signed in February 2020 for six Apaches, with this initial trio expected to be operational soon.
The AH‑64E is renowned for its Longbow radar, night-vision systems, Hellfire missiles, and drone-feed integration - earning its reputation as one of the most lethal attack helicopters globally. These combat-proven aircraft will primarily operate from Jodhpur, focusing on deterrence and tactical support along the Pakistan border.
This milestone underscores the Army’s expanding air combat role and marks a significant modernization stride in its aviation corps. With indigenous platforms like the Light Combat Helicopter also in service, the Apache addition offers a strategic operational edge.
