India is preparing legal amendments to liberalise its nuclear energy sector, aiming to encourage private participation and global partnerships. However, foreign equipment vendors have flagged critical gaps in India’s mid- and lower-tier nuclear supplier base, highlighting the need for quality upgrades and robust standards.
Global firms conducting audits and exploratory talks have stressed training programmes for suppliers, especially for newer technologies like light water reactors (LWRs) and small modular reactors (SMRs). The concern is that second- and third-tier suppliers, which provide inputs to major companies such as L&T, Bharat Forge, Godrej & Boyce, and Walchandnagar Industries, may not meet international standards.
Cybersecurity is another key issue. Vendors warned that inadequate protocols could risk control over vital operational data, potentially affecting nuclear plant safety.
Officials are planning to set up lead units for SMR-55 and BSMR 200 MWe at DAE sites for technology demonstration. The reforms also aim to help Indian industry access export markets, balance shop floor capacity, and enhance competitiveness.
The government is now exploring ways to train suppliers, implement quality standards, and strengthen cybersecurity, making India’s nuclear sector safer and globally competitive.
