Instagram tests Picture-in-Picture mode to let Reels play while multitasking!

Meta-owned Instagram is currently testing a new Picture-in-Picture (PiP) feature for Reels, allowing users to continue watching Reels in a floating mini-window even when switching to other apps . First observed by app researcher Radu Oncescu on Threads, the feature prompts eligible users with a pop-up reading “Try picture in picture. Turn this on to continue watching Reels in a floating window on your device after you’ve left Instagram” .

Once enabled, this PiP window is movable and resizable - similar to YouTube’s implementation - enabling seamless multitasking like responding to messages or browsing other social apps without interrupting video playback. Instagram head Adam Mosseri had previously acknowledged user requests for PiP support, and this live test signals progress toward that vision. By adding this feature, Instagram aims to boost engagement and retention, especially for longer Reels, while narrowing the feature gap with rivals like TikTok and YouTube.
