The 2025 Nobel Peace Prize has been awarded to Venezuelan opposition leader María Corina Machado, recognising her tireless efforts to defend democratic rights and push for a peaceful transition from dictatorship to democracy.
In its announcement, the Norwegian Nobel Committee praised Machado for bringing unity to a once-divided opposition movement, and for her “steadfast support for a peaceful transition to democracy.”
Machado’s journey has been marked by intense pressure from Venezuela’s authoritarian regime led by Nicolás Maduro. Despite being barred from running in the 2024 presidential election and forced to remain in hiding due to threats against her life, she continued to advocate non-violent resistance and electoral integrity.
Her award highlights the continued global spotlight on Venezuela’s political crisis and underscores the role of democratic resilience even under severe repression. The Nobel ceremony will take place in Oslo on December 10, when Machado will receive the medal, diploma, and monetary prize.
