Android 16 introduces Advanced Protection, a one-switch security feature that combines multiple protections to keep your phone and data safe. Once enabled, it locks certain features that can’t be turned off individually and activates extra safeguards.
What it does:
-
Apps: Always-on malware scanning via Google Play Protect, blocks sideloaded apps, and prevents memory corruption on supported devices.
-
Device safety: Theft detection lock, offline device lock, and automatic reboot after 72 hours of inactivity.
-
Messages & Calls: Spam protection, unsafe link warnings, caller ID screening, and automatic AI-based spam call declines.
-
Network & Web: Blocks insecure 2G networks, enforces safe browsing, HTTPS in Chrome, and adds JavaScript protections.
While it may block sideloaded apps and occasionally affect call screening, most users won’t notice much difference. For stolen devices, it automatically locks and protects your data.
Advanced Protection is off by default to avoid disrupting users, but turning it on dramatically improves security. For maximum safety, it can be paired with Google Account Advanced Protection, which secures Gmail, Drive, and other cloud data using stronger sign-in methods.
