Mumbai commuters faced major disruptions as drivers of Ola, Uber, and Rapido began an indefinite strike on Friday, protesting low earnings and high operational costs. The protest, led by the Maharashtra Rajya Rashtriya Kamgar Sangh, highlights how ride-hailing drivers are grappling with unsustainable income levels, even as fuel and maintenance costs continue to rise.
Drivers say they earn less than ₹300–₹500 a day after working over 12 hours, leaving little after fuel expenses. They are demanding an increased base fare, better commission structures, and driver welfare schemes. Many also claim they are penalized unfairly through automatic deductions for cancellations and negative ratings.
Union leader Govind Mohite stated that drivers have reached a tipping point, especially as previous appeals to platform companies and the Maharashtra government have gone unheard. The strike is expected to intensify unless demands are addressed promptly.
Commuters are now turning to autos, local trains, and buses as app-based rides vanish from streets. Prolonged protests could significantly impact the city's mobility in the coming days.
