The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has introduced a strict new policy targeting “loose FASTags” - tags not properly affixed to vehicle windscreens, often used fraudulently to evade tolls or share between vehicles. Toll booth operators are now mandated to report and blacklist these FASTags immediately to streamline toll collection and prevent lane congestion .
Often referred to as “tag-in-hand,” these non-fixed tags compromise the Electronic Toll Collection (ETC) system’s integrity. They can generate false chargebacks, misuse in closed-loop tolling, and disrupt traffic flow - prompting delays and frustration among genuine motorists .
In preparation for upcoming upgrades like the Annual Pass and Multi-Lane Free Flow (MLFF) systems, NHAI has also introduced a dedicated reporting mechanism via email and empowered concessionaires to initiate immediate hotlisting of offenders.
Compliant drivers whose FASTags are securely installed - will benefit from faster, smoother toll experiences. Meanwhile, those relying on loose tags risk losing ETC access and may face disruptions. To stay on the right side of the rules, users should firmly affix FASTags to windscreens and maintain sufficient balance.
