India will begin issuing tourist visas to Chinese nationals again starting July 24, 2025, ending a five-year suspension that began after the 2020 border standoff and pandemic disruptions. The Indian embassy in China confirmed the move on July 23, calling it a step toward normalizing travel and diplomatic ties.
While student and business visas for China had resumed in 2022, tourist visas remained halted until the recent decision. This change follows ongoing efforts since early 2025 to restore direct flights and better cross-border exchanges.
China welcomed India’s move, with its Foreign Ministry expressing readiness to boost citizen travel and engage in ongoing consultations. Both governments have acknowledged lingering border and trade issues, stating that resolving military friction and restoring mutual trust are needed for full normalization.
This shift aims to revive tourism, student visits, business travel, and cultural exchanges between the two nations. It reflects a careful diplomatic approach—opening doors while continuing to address complex geopolitical issues. As the first tourist visas in five years, this move may mark the start of cautious renewal in India–China people-to-people relations.
