The Congress on Monday sharply criticized the Modi government, warning that years of neglect in prioritizing aviation safety have left crucial regulatory bodies dangerously understaffed. Party leader Jairam Ramesh cited recent government data showing 53% of sanctioned posts at DGCA are vacant, along with 35% in BCAS and 17% at AAI, echoing growing concerns around aviation oversight .
The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), tasked with flight safety and regulations, reportedly has 814 vacancies out of 1,692 positions - nearly half unfilled as of March 31. Security watchdog BCAS and airport operator AAI also face 37% vacancy rates, according to data shared in Lok Sabha .
Ramesh warned that the shortage of inspectors, security personnel, and technical staff “could jeopardize flight safety and passenger security.” Congress argues that these vacancies contradict the government’s claims of a world-class aviation sector and demanded immediate recruitment to bridge the gap.
So far, the Ministry of Civil Aviation has partly relied on contractual hires and consultants, while AAI plans to onboard 1,098 executives this year - but critics say this is too little, too late.
