Sri Lanka has extended its visa-free travel policy to citizens of 40 countries, including major tourist markets like India, the US, UK, Canada, Pakistan, Iran, UAE, and Australia, as announced by Foreign Minister Vijitha Herath on July 25, 2025. This expansion follows the earlier pilot program that granted visa-free access to seven countries since October 2023.
Travelers from now 40 countries can enter Sri Lanka for short stays - typically up to 30 days, extendable - without paying visa fees. Though this move is expected to forego about USD 66 million in annual visa revenue, authorities predict that increased tourism will more than offset this loss, spurring recovery in the island nation’s economy .
Sri Lanka's tourism sector is poised for a rebound - boosting arrivals from markets including Europe, Middle East, and Southeast Asia. Visitors can also take advantage of new attractions, boutique stays, and improved airport infrastructure, positioning the country to compete with Singapore, Thailand, and Vietnam.
