Ramjas hostel closed-students left with no roof and rising rents!

Delhi University’s Ramjas College has closed its boys’ and girls’ hostels for the new academic session, citing serious safety concerns. This decision has left many students, especially those from outside Delhi, struggling to find affordable housing.

The hostels, which could accommodate about 150 students, were vacated after a roof collapse incident last year. Principal Ajay Arora said that the college will not risk student lives and will wait for a government safety audit before reopening the facilities.

Student groups like the All India Students’ Association (AISA) strongly opposed the move and staged protests on campus. They argued that shutting hostels without providing alternatives forces students to rent expensive private rooms or PGs, which many cannot afford.

AISA also accused the administration of neglecting public education infrastructure and called it an attempt to exclude students from marginalized backgrounds. They demanded immediate reopening or transparent timelines for repairs and hostel allotment.

As rent prices continue to rise, the lack of college accommodation is becoming a major burden on students. While the administration insists the move is temporary and safety-focused, the protestors vow to continue their fight for accessible student housing.
