Makhana May Not Be as Safe as You Think - Experts Warn These People to Avoid It!

Makhana, or fox nuts, is hailed as a low-calorie, high-protein superfood. Packed with antioxidants, it supports heart health, weight loss, and digestion. But while most people benefit from it, experts warn that certain groups should consume it with caution.

Who should avoid Makhana?

  • People with high potassium levels (hyperkalemia): Makhana is rich in potassium, which could further elevate potassium levels and harm the heart.

  • Kidney patients: Those with kidney disorders may need to limit Makhana, as excess potassium can stress weak kidneys.

  • People with allergies: Rarely, some may develop skin rashes, swelling, or breathing issues after eating it.

  • Diabetics (in excess): While Makhana has a low glycemic index, overeating may still cause blood sugar fluctuations.

  • Those with digestive issues: Too much Makhana can lead to constipation due to its high starch content.

Moderation is key - for healthy individuals, 30–50 grams daily is considered safe and beneficial. Pair it with other foods to balance nutrients.

Nutritionist Dr. A. Mehta advises, “Makhana can be a great snack, but understanding your body’s needs is essential for safe consumption.”
