Punjab's government directed all Deputy Commissioners to conduct DNA tests on children found begging with adults to verify their relationship. Social Security Minister Baljit Kaur issued the orders under project Jeewanjyot-2 to combat child trafficking and exploitation.
If suspicious relationships are identified, children will be placed in care institutions under child welfare committees until DNA results are available. Officials assured strict action if tests confirm adults are unrelated to accompanying children.
The directive follows last month's orders for districts to become "beggar-free" with regular monitoring. Kaur emphasized the government's commitment to child protection through sensitive yet stringent measures. Additionally, amendments to Punjab Prevention of Beggary Act (1971) will introduce stricter punishments against racketeers forcing children to beg.
