Gujarat has pioneered India's first genome sequencing initiative exclusively for tribal communities. The Tribal Genome Sequencing Project, announced by State Tribal Development Minister Kuber Dindor, will sequence genomes of 2,000 individuals across 17 districts to identify genetic health risks and enable precision healthcare.
The initiative, titled "Creation of Reference Genome Database for Tribal Population in Gujarat," is being implemented by Gujarat Biotechnology Research Centre (GBRC) under the 2025-26 state budget. The project focuses on early detection of genetic disorders including sickle cell anaemia, thalassaemia, and hereditary cancers.
Dindor emphasized this milestone will bridge science and tradition, supporting long-term tribal health improvements through personalized healthcare solutions and natural immunity markers identification.
