Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi was today conferred with Namibia’s highest civilian honour, the Order of the Most Ancient Welwitschia Mirabilis, by Namibian President Dr Netumbo Nandi‑Ndaitwah, during a ceremony in Windhoek. This award, symbolizing resilience and longevity and named after the signature desert plant, ranks as the nation’s premier civilian accolade.
India’s first-ever prime ministerial visit to Namibia marks only the third such by an Indian leader. Modi’s visit concludes a broader five-nation diplomatic mission, underlining growing ties between India and African nations. The ceremony also brought his tally to 27 international decorations granted by foreign governments since his 2014 tenure began.
Earlier, Modi and President Nandi‑Ndaitwah held delegation-level talks and signed four memorandums of understanding focused on energy, healthcare, digital technology, defence, security, critical minerals, and entrepreneurship. Modi acknowledged Namibia’s support in Project Cheetah, an emblematic conservation initiative, affirming shared commitments to environmental and development goals.
