Nitish Kumar Reddy delivered a memorable performance in the Boxing Day Test at the MCG, playing an invaluable knock under pressure. Coming in at 191-6, Reddy scored an unbeaten 105 off 176 balls, keeping India alive in the match against Australia. His maiden Test century evoked a strong emotional reaction from his father, Mutyala Reddy, who was seen wiping tears in the stands while celebrating his son’s remarkable achievement with family members.
Reddy also made waves with his celebrations, first with a 'Pushpa' move after reaching his half-century, drawing inspiration from Allu Arjun’s iconic character, ‘Pushpa Raj’. Later, upon completing his century, he performed the famous 'Baahubali' pose, adding a unique touch to his milestone.
Reddy’s century placed him in an elite group of Indian batters, joining the likes of Virender Sehwag, Virat Kohli, Ajinkya Rahane, and Cheteshwar Pujara as the fifth player to score a century in the Boxing Day Test at the MCG. Furthermore, he broke Virender Sehwag’s record for the most sixes by an Indian in a single Test series in Australia, hitting seven sixes.
In addition, Reddy entered the record books as the second youngest Indian batter (21 years and 214 days) to score a century at No. 8 or lower in Test cricket, after Ajay Ratra. This exceptional performance has solidified Reddy’s position as one of India’s rising stars in Test cricket.
