Tesla is gearing up to launch its robotaxi service on June 22, 2025, in Austin, Texas, with CEO Elon Musk announcing that 10-20 Model Y SUVs will offer paid rides using Full Self-Driving (FSD) Unsupervised software, per a June 10 CNBC report. Musk emphasized safety, noting on X that the date could shift due to paranoia about risks, and added that self-delivery from factories to customers begins June 28. The service, initially geofenced with remote human supervision, aims to expand to California and other states by year-end, despite stringent regulations and safety concerns from NHTSA investigations into FSD crashes.
Musk’s pivot to autonomous vehicles follows a 13% sales drop in Q1 2025, with Tesla’s valuation hinging on this venture amid competition from Waymo, which operates 250,000 weekly trips. Skeptics question Tesla’s camera only vision, citing issues like sun glare, while Musk touts its AI-driven approach as revolutionary.
