On June 9, 2025, Israeli forces intercepted the Madleen, a Freedom Flotilla Coalition vessel carrying Greta Thunberg and 11 activists delivering humanitarian aid to Gaza, prompting Thunberg’s claim of being kidnapped in international waters. In a pre-recorded video, Thunberg urged pressure on the Swedish government for their release, accusing Israel of violating international law. The Israeli Foreign Ministry dismissed the vessel as a “selfie yacht,” stating passengers were safe, provided with sandwiches and water, and would be repatriated from Ashdod port. The flotilla, loaded with formula, flour, and diapers, aimed to challenge Israel’s Gaza blockade.
US President Donald Trump, responding to Thunberg’s claims, called her a “strange, angry person” needing “anger management classes,” questioning the authenticity of her anger. He added, “Israel has enough problems without kidnapping Greta Thunberg,” downplaying her allegations. The incident has sparked global debate over Israel’s actions and Thunberg’s activism.
