Civil Aviation Minister K. Rammohan Naidu confirmed today (June 24, 2025) that the black box from the Air India Boeing 787 crash in Ahmedabad is being examined by India’s Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB) and dismissed speculation that it would be sent abroad for analysis.
The crash of flight AI‑171, which took off from Ahmedabad on June 12 bound for London, claimed 241 lives aboard and 39 on the ground, with only one survivor . The black box was recovered the next day and remains under meticulous scrutiny in India .
Minister Naidu emphasized that claims of sending the recorder overseas were "all … speculation," reassuring the media during the Helicopters & Small Aircraft Summit 2025 that India has both the expertise and infrastructure to conduct the probe domestically . He noted that decoding the flight data and cockpit voice recordings is technical and urged patience as the AAIB completes its process .
A high-level inquiry panel has been formed, with hopes to decode critical insights into the crash’s cause before releasing its report in the coming months .
