Trump sharply criticized Hamas for impeding progress in Gaza ceasefire negotiations. Speaking before departing for Scotland, Trump asserted that Hamas “didn’t really want to make a deal” and even stated, “I think they want to die,” referring to the militant group’s apparent unwillingness to negotiate.
Recent diplomatic efforts mediated by the U.S., Qatar, and Egypt had aimed to broker a ceasefire in exchange for hostage releases. Trump’s special Middle East envoy, Steve Witkoff, withdrew the U.S. negotiating team from Doha, citing Hamas’s lack of coordination and sincerity. Israel’s negotiators also left, effectively halting indirect talks.
Trump added that with only a few hostages remaining, Hamas “doesn’t have any bargaining chips” and predicted the group’s leadership would be “hunted down.”
In a separate statement, Trump urged Israel to “finish the job” and “get rid of” Hamas entirely.
The collapse of negotiations comes amid a worsening humanitarian crisis in Gaza, with reports of widespread child malnutrition under blockade and continued fighting that has devastated the enclave.
