A nationalised bank manager in Maharashtra's Baramati town died by suicide, allegedly due to intense work pressure. The deceased, identified as Shivshankar Mitra, was found hanging inside the bank premises late Thursday night (July 17), according to officials at the Baramati police station.
Mitra, who was reportedly in his late 40s, left behind a handwritten note in which he directly blamed excessive work-related stress as the reason for taking the extreme step. The letter is now a key part of the ongoing police investigation.
The tragedy has drawn attention to the heavy workload and mental health challenges faced by employees in India’s banking sector, particularly in public-sector banks. While no foul play is suspected at this point, police are conducting further inquiries, including speaking to colleagues and family members, to gather a clearer picture.
The bank has not issued an official statement yet. Mitra’s death has left his coworkers and the local community in shock.
